Contract Education to Improve Production Line and Mechanic Training Program

The Challenge

Kern Community College District engaged with Grimmway Enterprises to determine any workforce skills gaps and training needs they were seeking to solve. Grimmway expressed that their primary challenge involved finding qualified maintenance mechanics. This challenge was exacerbated by the fact that they were losing experienced maintenance mechanics to other businesses in the area for $1 to $2 per hour more.

The Solution

The solution was twofold:

1. Provide electrical level 1 training for their existing team of maintenance mechanics to improve their troubleshooting skills.

2. Provide core industrial skills training to their frontline production line staff to groom them to move in to entry-level maintenance mechanic positions.

Some sections of each class were offered as bi-lingual delivery with a Spanish-speaking interpreter present to provide translation, especially for questions asked by the students. Employment Training Panel funds were used to pay for the training.

Outcomes

The program has been well-received by Grimmway, who has requested to expand the training to all of their facilities. The quality of the training has encouraged Grimmway to add Electrical Level II training, Leadership Institute and NFPA-70e electrical safety training to their offerings. Core Industrial Skills trainees have progressed in to the Electrical Level 1 training and some have already been promoted. Grimmway has since added a Leadership training component to their program as some of their frontline staff are being promoted in to supervisory roles for the first time.

The Data

244 employees have been trained in nine months for a total of 14,192 training hours.
