College of San Mateo (CSM) earned Strong Workforce Stars recognition in the Small Business sector for its entrepreneurship courses. Students who participate in these courses boost their earnings by 65%, and 94% of students who participate in this program get a job in their field of study.
CSM has been building out its entrepreneurship offerings from a cluster of related courses to a full-blown certificate. Working with faculty who have experience starting their own businesses and with deep connections in Silicon Valley, the college is helping students to hone their skills in creating and promoting business plans. Students in the college’s business club participate in regional and state pitch competitions, where they have won first place on multiple occasions. The entrepreneurship program partners with other college majors, such as the computer information systems, cosmetology and music programs, to create opportunities to pair new business development with specific workplace skills.
